Embedded software to enable prototype thin client display devices to interact with the remote desktop feature of Microsoft Server 2008.

Our client, a fabless graphics processing acceleration chipset designer, contracted Emutex to develop the embedded software required to enable their prototype thin-client display device to interact with the remote desktop feature of Microsoft Server 2008. We based our solution on the Linux application FreeRDP.

We decided that DirectFB would be the best front-end to use but, at the time, FreeRDP did not support DirectFB as a front-end. We therefore integrated the keyboard, mouse and GUI functionality from DirectFB into FreeRDP. In addition, we integrated graphics compression acceleration capability into DirectFB to provide a remote user display experience that was practically the same as that at a local desktop.
