Our Team

Emutex [em-u-tex], derived from the engineering terms embedded mutex.

We are a team of experts in software and electronic engineering. Since the foundation of our company in Nov'07 we have steadily grown our team and our network of engineering partners. Partnerships enable us to quickly scale up our resources and capabilities to meet the needs of large complex projects.

John Twomey
Managing Director, CEO, BEng

John is an expert in embedded real-time software development and telecommunication systems. He also has comprehensive experience in leading engineering teams both as an Engineering Manager and Project Manager. He graduated as an Electronic Engineer in the University of Limerick (Ireland) in 1991. He began his career with Softech Telecom (Dublin, Ireland) where he developed software for PBX-based telephone billing systems. In 1993 he joined Tellabs (Shannon, Ireland) where he developed and commissioned voice telephony signalling converters, switches and gateways deployed in telco exchanges world-wide. In 2000 he joined the start-up Basis Communications (Shannon, Ireland) which was acquired by Intel later that year. In Intel, John lead and project managed large multi-site teams including subcontracted parties to develop and deliver embedded real-time software for Intel’s IXP network processors now widely used in internet communication appliances, e.g. broadband wireless routers. In 2007 John co-founded Emutex with Mark Burkley.

Mark Burkley
Technical Director, CTO, BEng

Mark is an expert in embedded real-time software development and data-networking, having delivered high quality solutions to customers world-wide. He graduated as an Electronic Engineer in the University of Limerick (Ireland) in 1991. He began his career in Industrial Computing Machines (Portlaoise, Ireland) where he developed and commissioned Industrial Automation and Control applications for the animal feed processing industry. In 1996 he transferred to Tecnomen (Shannon, Ireland) where he developed software ingredients for telecommunication Paging Systems. In 2000 he joined the start-up Basis Communications (Shannon, Ireland) which was acquired by Intel later that year. In Intel, Mark developed and commissioned software for Intel’s IXP network processors now widely used in internet communication appliances, e.g. broadband wireless routers. In 2007 Mark co-founded Emutex with John Twomey.

Darren Bane
Software Engineer, MEng

Darren is an expert in software development and technologies. He graduated with a degree in Applied Computing from Waterford Institute of Technology in 1998. He began his career in Tellabs (Shannon, Ireland) where he initially supported the software development process with CASE tools and later worked as a software developer. In 2000 he joined the start-up Basis Communications (Shannon, Ireland) which was acquired by Intel later that year. In Intel, Darren developed embedded and real-time software for Intel's IXP network processors now widely used in Internet communication appliances, e.g. broadband routers. In 2003 Darren pursued a full-time Masters Degree in Engineering by Research in the University of Limerick under Professor David Parnas. Darren successfully completed his research in CASE technologies before joining Emutex in 2008.
